Trump’s second presidency started with an expected amount of fuss. After promising a new ‘golden age’ for America, he used his first hours to sign a significant amount of executive orders. With these orders he did not only undo a lot of Biden’s work, he also declared a state of emergency at the Mexican border, left The Paris Agreement and made TikTok accessible again for at least 75 days.
In the two weeks that followed, we’ve seen buyouts for federal workers – including those at the CIA – on a massive scale, immigrants being flown to Guantanamo Bay and tariffs being implemented and revoked in a matter of days. At the same time Elon Musk has – with his Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – seemingly taken control of some of the biggest branches of government while locking previous government workers out of their computer systems.
On the evening of the 20th of February we will try and make sense of it all. We will look at what the first 31 days of Trump’s second term has brought The United States and the rest of the world. How many of Trump’s election promises will become reality? What did those executive orders achieve? Is Elon Musk’s alleged Nazi-salute the symptom of a bigger social, and political slide? And is the American government really being taken over by tech-bro’s?
Together with Kirsten Verdel, Jaap van Slageren and Michal Onderco, we will take an in depth look at the start of Trump’s second term and what to expect in the coming months.
This is a program of Debatpodium Arminius.
